Our Rainwear Waterproof Ratings

Waterproof ratings are measured in millimetres using a Hydrostatic Head test. In a Hydrostatic Head test the fabric is pulled tight under a 1 inch diameter sealed tube of water. This is then observed over 24 hours to ascertain how many millimetres of water (the height of the column) the fabric can withstand before it starts soaking through. The level at which water starts to come through the fabric is the hydrostatic head. It is measured in mm.

The 5000mm rating for both the Hiker & Explorer is considered suitable for moderate rain in situations where no additional pressure is applied (e.g. not good enough for bush bashing but fine for casual walking, watching sports, etc., travel and most general uses.)

Our Rainwear Breathability Ratings

The rating is an indicator of how breathable the fabric is and lets you know how much water vapor (or sweat in this case!) the fabric will allow through to the outside of the jacket. This stops the sweat and moisture staying next to the skin which causes you to get cold. It is measured in grams.

So, a 3,000g/m2/24hrs jacket will allow 3,000grams of moisture vapour to disperse through one square metre of fabric, and away from the body over a 24 hour period.

Most people find a breathability rating of 3,000g/m2/24hrs, as used by both the Hiker & Explorer sufficiently breathable for the uses outlined in the waterproof rating sections above.
